The Auvergne is one of the last truly unspoilt areas of ‘real’ France and provides the perfect combination of plenty to do, gorgeous countryside and a down-to-earth, friendly welcome. For decades, it has been a popular holiday destination for the French and yet is unknown to many outside of the region. It is an area of spectacular natural beauty with a mix of volcanic mountain scenery, pretty rural villages, historic towns and one of France’s largest nature reserves – the Regional Park of Livradois-Forez.
Ideal for nature lovers and adventurers alike, the idyllic valleys, glacial lakes and volcanic mountains provide opportunities for fishing, hiking, swimming, mountain biking, riding, hang-gliding and almost every kind of outdoor sport imaginable!
Spa Towns and Shopping
The fashionable spa of Vichy is nearby with it’s thermal springs, famous waters and wonderful opera house, whilst the elegant capital of Clermont-Ferrand boasts museums, chic shopping, galleries, theatre and, of course, Rugby. Both cities are less than an hour from Le Coteau d'Olliergues.
World Renowned Gastronomy
Of course, the region is also famous all over the world for the exceptional quality of local produce. Regional specialities include mountain hams, pork, beef, fruit, vegetables and of course, world renowned cheeses. In fact, Le Coteau d'Olliergues is situated on the ‘Route des Fromages’, a national cheese trail peppered with artisanal cheesemakers, farmers and cheesemongers. Many local producers are open to the public and all of the villages and towns have good markets.
Bargain Hunting
If you are fond of bargain hunting, there are brocantes (antique and bric-a-brac markets) held almost every weekend where you can find beautiful old French linen, ceramics, glass and household treasures that have yet to be snapped up by the interior designers of Paris and Brighton. It is well worth getting up early to watch the antique buyers at work or even beat them to a bargain
Winter Sports
Whilst the landscape is beautiful in summer, it is just as spectacular when covered in snow. What’s more, Le Coteau d'Olliergues is close to many of the regions’ best ski stations. Unlike the Alps, the local stations are seldom crowded with ski passes and even tuition fees that are more than reasonable. Downhill, Nordic, sledging and even snowshoeing are all available as well as husky driving, kite skiing and any other sport involving snow! Some of the stations even have ice-rinks.
Further Information
There are street markets, festivals and sporting events throughout the year as well as tourist trains, theme parks, zoos and even a beach in the middle of Clermont Ferrand in the summer. There is so much to do in the area that we are currently building a separate English speaking website listing events in the immediate area. This is a work in progress so in the meantime please follow us on Twitter or email us directly with your proposed visit dates and interests. We will compile a bespoke list for you.
